Biomass is one of the most important parameters in cell culture on a commercial scale. The more details you know about the fermentation process, the better you can determine the optimal time for feeding and collecting cells. So far, offline methods, such as visual cell counting or semi-automatic systems, have dominated biomass measurements. However, this requires representative sampling, which prevents continuous measurement of biomass during the ongoing batch. Moreover, offline methods do not allow real-time monitoring and control because the analysis is time-consuming.
The BioPAT®ViaMass biomass measurement system provides proven sensor technology that has been used for decades in stainless steel fermenters and disposable bioreactors. Based on impedance spectroscopy, this sensor technology measures the specific capacity of culture medium and cells, providing an excellent correlation with sustainable biomass. Combined with a sophisticated automation platform, BioPAT® ViaMass, together with the versatile Biobrain® Supervise software package, provides 100% traceable process documentation.
