Custom-made SKID Water Filtration System – A Tailor-Made Solution for Your Process

Tuesday, 27.01.2026. - 12:00

In every serious process, water is the “invisible ingredient” that holds the entire system together — as long as its quality meets requirements, everything runs smoothly; once it starts to fluctuate, the consequences are quickly reflected in equipment performance, product quality, and timelines. That is why our team at Sartorius Croatia started from what truly matters: understanding the application requirements and translating them into a tailor-made solution. This is how our custom-made SKID water filtration system was created, designed for rapid integration and reliable control of process water quality. In collaboration with our partner Marinox, the system was manufactured in a hygienic design using AISI 316L stainless steel, pre-assembled and functionally tested prior to delivery, to make on-site installation simpler, reduce risk, and ensure faster and more predictable commissioning. The result is a compact, validated unit that delivers what matters most to the process: reliability, transparency, and continuous quality.

In the pharmaceutical and bioprocess industry, water and its quality are an integral part of the process and directly impact manufacturing reliability, equipment stability, and compliance with hygienic standards. When a customer requires a solution that is compact, scalable and ready for quick installation, a SKID water filtration system is often the most efficient route to a stable and controlled process.

In cooperation with the manufacturing partner Marinox, Sartorius Croatia contributed to the development and delivery of a SKID water filtration system made of AISI 316L stainless steel, with a focus on hygienic design, repeatability and verified functionality prior to delivery.

What is a SKID system and why is it important?

A SKID system is a pre-assembled process unit mounted on a supporting frame, where key components — piping, filters, valves, and connections — are integrated into one functional unit. Unlike “field-built” installation, the SKID concept offers clear advantages:

  • shorter installation time and faster commissioning

  • reduced risk of on-site errors (less improvisation and rework)

  • more predictable execution because the system is assembled and tested before delivery

  • easier maintenance and service, with improved visibility and accessibility of components

In other words, a SKID is not just a “mechanical frame”, but a way to standardize the process, accelerate implementation, and increase reliability.

Hygienic design: materials and standards that make the difference

In hygienically demanding applications, the selection of materials and connection standards is fundamental. The SKID system in this project is made of AISI 316L (W.Nr. 1.4404), a material commonly used in the pharmaceutical and process industries due to:

  • high corrosion resistance

  • suitability for hygienic cleaning regimes

  • long-term stability in controlled processes

The design is aligned with DIN 11851 (hygienic fittings), which facilitates safe integration into systems where cleanliness, traceability, and connection reliability are a priority.

Key applications: where SKID water filtration delivers the highest value?

Such systems are widely used in industries where water quality is linked to product quality and process stability. Typical applications include:

  • water filtration and treatment

  • process media sampling

  • pharmaceutical and other hygienically demanding applications where contamination control is critical

If the goal is to reduce variability and ensure consistent operating conditions, the SKID approach often offers the best balance between implementation speed and process safety.

From application requirements to an operational solution

At Sartorius Croatia, our focus is to ensure that water filtration and water preparation solutions are aligned with real process conditions: water quality requirements, expected operating regimes, hygienic standards, maintenance needs, and future scalability.

In custom-made SKID system projects, we typically support through:

  • understanding application goals and critical process points

  • defining functional requirements and the approach to process control

  • support in selecting the configuration and integrating it into existing systems

  • technical consulting throughout delivery and commissioning phases
